Sandra served in the Army from 1992 to 1996 as a weapons trainer, running gas chamber simulation trainings for new recruits. Her time in the military was a positive experience for Sandra, and the skills and trainings she received enabled her to transitioned into civilian employment. At the height of the 2008 recession, Sandra lost her administrative job at a New York law firm. After being unemployed for over two years and exhausting all of her life savings, Sandra fell behind on her rent and was evicted. She landed in a homeless veterans shelter and made herself a promise to do everything possible not stay there long. “After being a veteran and working my entire life, I never though that I would be in this situation. I made a promise to myself that every day I would get up and do something to get out of these doors.” True to her promise, Sandra’s stay in the homeless shelter lasted only three months. She entered Jericho’s Veteran Supportive Apartment Program in June 2010 and shortly after found an apartment in the Bronx fully furnished by Jericho. “Jericho was there for me when I didn’t have anyone to turn to for moral support. I know that anytime I want, I can pick up the phone and they will be there.” Today, Sandra continues to thrive in her new home while working to find employment. Her Jericho Career Counselor has helped her with her resume, employment search, and refining her interviewing skills that have languished during her period of unemployment. ![]() |
