Jericho Project Receives Award at Robin Hood Heroes Breakfast

Decorated Veteran Jose Anthony Pagan honored as part of Jericho Veterans Initiative

Jericho Project, a national nonprofit leader in ending homelessness at its roots, announced that its Veterans Initiative has received the 2010 Robin Hood Heroes Award. As part of the award, Robin Hood presented a $50,000 check to Jericho Project.

Jose Anthony Pagan, a decorated veteran from the Bronx and a participant in Jericho’s Veterans Initiative enabling veterans to return to civilian life with dignity, shared his story of challenge and success with the audience at the Robin Hood 21st Annual Heroes Award Breakfast at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Mr. Pagan served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006 to 2009 including two years in a bomb-detonation unit. He was awarded a commendation medal for his service. New Jericho Veterans Supportive Apartment Program

In another new initiative just launched to help at risk veterans and their families get housing immediately, Jericho has partnered with the James J. Peters Bronx VA Medical Center to launch Jericho’s Veterans Supportive Apartment Program to fast track veterans and their families to affordable, furnished apartments.  Jericho will also help them land jobs and build skills through its successful Vocational and Education program, as well as relapse prevention, family counseling, and crisis management. 

This program will eliminate the often overwhelming challenges that many veterans face in trying to locate, fund and apply for affordable housing within the 120 days that they have to use their HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers.

Both the Supportive Apartment Program and Jericho's two new Veterans Residences will use Jericho’s proven model for helping formerly homeless individuals transform their lives and achieve their greatest potential: supportive housing to provide a secure foundation; comprehensive counseling to prepare the individual for success, and aftercare to ensure ongoing support for at least two years.

"Goldman Sachs Gives" Awards Grant for Jericho's Veterans Initiative

Goldman Sachs Gives has awarded a grant to Jericho Project for its Veterans Initiative; the cornerstone of which is two new supportive housing residences in New York City for homeless and low-income veterans.  Some 200,000 veterans are homeless on any one night across America; and an estimated 3,500 veterans are homeless in New York City.  “Veterans have given so much for our country and we are very proud to support Jericho's efforts to ensure that they are cared for and treated with respect," said Dina Powell, Managing Director and Global Head of Corporate Engagement.

ReMIND.ORG, a Bob Woodruff Foundation Initiative, awards second $100,000 to Jericho Project for at-risk and homeless veterans

ReMIND.org, a Bob Woodruff Foundation initiative, has awarded its second $100,000 grant to the Jericho Project for use in helping veterans from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who sustained Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Post Traumatic Stress. The Jericho Project, a nonprofit leader in ending homelessness at its roots, is building two Veterans Residences in the Bronx, New York, to deliver permanent supportive housing and comprehensive counseling services to veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

"As our veterans return from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, we must be prepared to address mental, physical and social traumas they face," said Jericho Project Executive Director Tori Lyon. The intensity and violence there are incubators for Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, which can cascade into financial dislocation, family estrangement and homelessness," she added.
